Backyard Oasis

If you have followed along over the course of the year you know the terrible desert that was once my backyard. I hated my backyard and I was embarrassed. That has since changed.

Back in October I had a fence installed, had grass put in, and had a patio extended. At Christmas we gave our kids a brand new swing set. In May we bought a brand new patio table.

As you can tell we have done a complete overhaul of the backyard and recently upgraded again and had a pergola built over the patio. I love it and it is nice to have a cover and some shade on those very hot summer days. I spent some time this week putting lights on it and made it look like this.

Now I have my own little place to entertain and relax. I am so excited to use this.

The Smarter The House

The past couple of days I have been obsessed with making my house smarter. I have researched this for the past few weeks and decided on a few products that I wanted.

The first thing I got was a camera. I put this thing in the house and now I have a live view of what is going on at all times. Its great for when I want to look in on the dogs or if I want to know what is going on when I am away.

The second thing I got was electronic lock for the door. This lets me know when my doors are locked and who unlocked it. I can even give guest an individual digital key so they can come in anytime. It automatically locks when my wife and I leave and are in so many feet from the house.

Now I have some upcoming projects around the house to make it more smarter and energy efficient. I want to get a wifi enabled garage door opener, some wifi outlets and some energy saving light bulbs. Maybe I could cut down on my electric bill by doing this.

Have you made your house a little smarter? Tell me about it.

Clean Out And Sell

This weekend I spent the majority of my Saturday cleaning up the garage cause it was very crowded. I can’t tell you how much stuff I threw away. Things that I have no clue why we were holding on to. Broken toys, chairs,  and old bags with empty sunscreen bottles in them. It was time for a clean and purge.

After almost two hours of sweating I finally got my garage about 85% the way I wanted it. I read an article that it is recommended to clean out your a house every three years. I actually believe this. We have been in our home for over three years so you can imagine what I was dealing with.

One thing that this article recommend was to sell your old stuff. I was pretty excited to to this so I listed my old elliptical, some decorate pics, my bike, and old coffee maker. I was happy to say that I sold my elliptical for $80!

I was really glad to be rid of that thing as I never used it. Now I have the cleaning bug. This weekend I am going to clean put mine and my wife’s closet to what other things I have that I could get rid of.

Ding Dong The Floors Are Done!

When my wife and I built our house one of the things I really wanted was hardwood floors. I hate carpet and I think dining rooms that have carpet is extremely dumb. Well, it was hella expensive to do them at the time so we decided to wait.

Three years later we finally were able to get them. Last week I share they were about to be installed and how my wife and I spent the great portion of our night backing and moving things off the floor. It was a nightmare. I was so sore on Friday morning when I woke up that I almost did not make it through my morning workout.

Now as you read yesterday, we were at the beach all weekend. We came home and found our house in total disarray. The couches were moved to the side, the table was blocking the back door and everything and I mean EVERYTHING was covered in dust.

We spent about 2 to 3 hours after getting home from the beach arranging furniture and dusting off all the surfaces. All the cups and dishes that were left on the counters had to be washed again. It was crazy. I was tired after being on gone all weekend.

There is a plus to every story and that is that I LOVE my new floors and I think they make my house look amazing.

Before and After

Garage Renovation Part 2

img_0668

You may remember at the beginning of the year I wrote a blog about what I wanted to do to my garage. I wanted to make it into a home crossfit gym. Well it took a while and lots of planning but I am happy to say that this dream has finally been made a reality. Actually, to be honest, I totally forgot about this project and it was only a couple of months ago when I decided to finish this project.

So the first thing I needed was a squat rack and lucky for me it was around  Christmas time and my wife decided to get me one. After a few days of looking online I settle for the one from PRX Performance. Not only was the rack very affordable but it came with a lot of extra stuff such as a 20 pound wallball, an abmat, and weight and bar storage. Another great thing about this rack was that it was able to fit into the wall so we could still use the garage to store other things.

My friend Mike came over and installed it. The installation process was easy and  it was only a matter of two hours and my squat rack was up on the wall and ready to use. After we got the weight holders and wall ball holder on the wall, my home gym was almost complete.

As the week went by I bought some rubber flooring mats and a set of 16kg and 24kg kettle bells along with some more plates. It was starting to look like a real gym. Soon I decide that I needed a rower although I did have a treadmill but I needed a rower for the most basic crossfit  workouts. After moving the treadmill into the house and in the kids playroom, I was ready to buy a new rower.

After I got the rower, I hung all my medals back on the wall and had a guy come out to the house and install some custom shelves. The next few days I spent cleaning off the floor and moving boxes on the new shelves. Then I hung the whiteboard back on the wall. The gym was ready.

Since finally getting the space I need and wanted to workout, I have used it almost everyday in some degree, It really does help on those days I can’t make it to the gym. So glad to have this space. I have a feeling I am going to have a great time in my new gym.

Garage Renovation Part 1- Cleaning It Out

Well I have finally decided to do it. I need to clean out my garage….

This was not an easy decision cause I hate to think about all the things I am going to find in there but I need more space. With three girls in the house, I need a space to do man things! I am not exactly sure what I will do with it but I have a few ides.

  1. I could turn it into the ultimate stock pile room!
  2. I always wanted my very own gym complete with everything a guy could as for.
  3. I could set up a huge TV and put some couches in there and have epic football watching time.
  4. A place to just store stuff- I think thats how I got myself in this situation.
  5. A place to raise live chickens

So maybe number five is a little out there but if I was going to make any decision it was going to be to go with NUMBER TWO! It would be nice to have a home gym on those days I can’t make it to my box.

So I started my garage makeover by getting rid of the 32 boxes of books my dad left me. It was a hard call but I needed the space and what was I really going to do with 32 boxes of nonfiction books? So they were sent to Goodwill for someone who really might get some use out of them.

The next thing is to move some furniture around. I really want to move the stockpile that is in the garage back in to the house mostly cause I am scared the food will go bad faster.  I also still need to find the best places to put the lawn mower and other yard stuff.

The next thing is to sweep it out and cleanup all the leaves that have blown in from the fall. You might think that I am the worlds nastiest person at this moment but I have been putting this project off for so long that it feels goos to finally get some of this stuff done.

As far as putting things on the wall, I have really been itching to find a place to put my race medals and bibs. I fave not gotten there yet but I did find some great things on Pinterest that really have me excited.

You really can’t have a gym without some equipment. That would be crazy! So here is a list of the stuff to get for my home gym.

  1. Flooring
  2. Squat Rack
  3. Weight Bar
  4. Rubber Weight Plates 10/15/25/45 lbs
  5. Kettlebells 24kg/16kg
  6. Dumbbells 20lbs+
  7. Medicine Ball 20 lbs
  8. Jump Rope
  9. Pull Up Bar
  10. Ab Mat
  11. Bands
  12. Rower
  13. 20/24/30 Box

I already have a treadmill and an elliptical. I will be on the hunt for the other stuff later.

I am so excited for this project and can’t wait to get my home gym done. I will keep you posted as I work to get this done.

Here are some of the ideas I got from Pinterest.

Christmas Lights And Milk Beards

Ok so this past weekend I needed to do the one task of the holiday season I put off to the last-minute every year: Putting the Christmas Lights up. It would not be so bad if it was not the most cold and wet day of the month. My face and hands were so numb but I finally finished and this was my masterpiece.

I know it looks really simple but let me just say that the hardest part was trying to figure our how to wire the whole thing. That took about an hour and then the actual putting the lights on the house took about 45 minutes.  Next year I plan on not doing it in the rain cause my neighbors looked at me weird from the warmth of their livingroom windows. I guess they were hoping for a “Chevy Chase” moment. Sorry to disappoint.

So this week my wife decided to try giving K-Dub real milk since we are almost to the stage where buying formula will be a thing of the past. YAY! Formula is expensive and if it was not for my local membership to a Sam’s Club, I might be currently living out of a cardboard box.

We have been trying to introduce a lot of “people food” to K-Dub for the past few months to get her use to life after formula. We started with soft foods like apple sauce, mash potatoes, baby food, and even yogurt. After she got use to the idea of eating with a spoon we moved on to meats. She did well with that. She liked everything except for pork, which was a little too tough for her. So this whole milk thing should be easy. Right?

K-Dub tried it and made a weird face. This face is the one you make when you smell something bad. I use to have an aunt who had a face that was stuck this way. I know that face. She then spit it out and smiled. She then took another sip….then another…..and another….then one more. She finished what was in her cup and she looked like this.

She is so cute that I could not help but laugh. Can’t wait to introduce juices to her. I think she is going to be more like her dad and love apple juice. Parenthood is so much fun!
