She Is Four

As a dad, it is hard to watch your kids grow up. I am more then likely not the first person to tell you this as almost everyone said this to me at the time of K-Dub’s birth. It is however true. So true that sometimes you feel like if you blink your kid will be packing their bag and heading off to college. I am being way more dramatic then I need to be but you get the idea.

This week K-Dub is turned four. Wow, four years old. It wont be long before she starts Kindergarten. The other day I was making plans for her party which was Saturday and I could not help but get a little emotional. Its hard to keep it together when you know you are just another year closer to when your oldest leaves you.

I remember the day she was born. It was there day that changed my wife and I forever. Funny how you never knew some much love could exist until you have it bundled up in your arms.

I remember when she first started to walk. Now I can’t keep you from running around Target.

I remember the first time she got sick.

I remember the first time Paw Paw held her

I remember her making Christmas goodies with Maw Maw.

I even remember her first birthday party.

It is so hard to believe she is growing up. Now she loves to be a princess, likes to swing at the playground, get her nails done, wear jewelry and even help Daddy make dinner. She is so special to us and a delight to raise. Sometimes she makes things harder then they need to be. Dinner time is always a fight to get her to eat something other then Goldfish and a cereal bar. She freaks out if she gets the slightest drop of water on her sleeve and must change her shirt ASAP. She only can be a princess when she has a dress on and don’t call her one otherwise. She never wants to go to bed unless you tell her that there is a bath before hand.

Parenting is hard. It just is and no one is better at then others. People just do a better job of hiding it then others. Kids are tough and fearless which is scary. It is a never ending rid that goes way up and then comes crashing down the next turn. I love these moments even though they are hard and I feel like a failure as a dad, I still would not trade them for anything.

Watching K-Dub grow up has been a privilege. Yes that is the word I chose. I could easily have left at any time but I chose to stay and love this little girl. I love teaching her right from wrong, making snacks with her, taking her on special dates, fighting with her about proper shoes for school and punishing her for talking back to her mom. It is all in a days work.

Now she is growing up and one day will not me. Even after I spend three hours of my day off building her a Disney Princess Dollhouse.

Until then I will just continue to enjoy the ride.

The party was a blast. K-Dub had a lot of fun and the day was truly about her. Here are some pics from her party and when we gave her her present.

Under The Sea And To The Potty

No trip can begin without a trip to the potty. This a fact an any parent that tells you different is a liar….

Its been a long time since I updated you all on K-Dub’s potty progress. I have to say that when my wife and I decided it was time to teach K-Dub how to use the potty, we never thought about how much it was going to effect us. I try not to complain a lot when it comes to parenting but this blog post would not make a great point without me expressing some of my frustrations. Here we go…

First, when potty training our daughter I have found that she has good days, bad days, and horrible days. You never know which one you will have. If you can make it to lunch without an accident then I really do consider that a parental win. Then those days where it seems that K-Dub can’t make it tot potty in time or it seems she is just too damn lazy to stop playing and go. Those days make me want to tear what is left of my hair completely out.

While I was enjoying my down time this past weekend, My wife and I decided to take our daughter to the aquarium in Concord, NC. I have never been to that aquarium and I heard good things so I was interested to see if it was going to be a great experience. No experience is complete without a trip to the potty before we headed in, while we were there, again, and then right before we left. I swear I have never met anyone or a child for that fact that can pee so much. We still had a great time but I have to say that I was exhausted when it came time for her to potty.

What really makes me super mad about potty training is when K-Dub tells me that she needs to go and then we get to the potty and she does nothing and just sits there and smiles at me. The kind of smile that reads “Gotcha Daddy”. If she was not so damn cute I would be real mad but when this happens I just tell myself that she is two. A smart two-year old at that.

Just keep saying a prayer for us as we continue this process. I have been pooped and peed on but I am still not willing to give up on her!

Why I Would Never Let Curious George In 5 Feet Of Me!

teachers

One of my favorite children’s books ever is Curious George. I love everything about this book as a kid cause it opened the door to my imagination.  I recently found my copy I got for Christmas back in 1994 and was reading it to myself and found that now,as an adult,  I can’t help but have some questions about everyone’s favorite curious monkey.

1. What is with The Man in the Yellow Hat?

Why does this man want a monkey so bad? Why does he live alone? Why does he wear a yellow hat all the time? Why does the hat have to be yellow? Why does it have to be a cowboy hat and not a baseball hat? What does he do for a living? How come he never dates around? Does he not realize that a monkey can not talk back? and why does he even talk to a monkey? He clearly is lonely but get a roommate, dog, or adopt a kid. If a monkey is your best friend then you have some serious issues.

2. How come no one seems to mind a loose monkey on the street?

Maybe I have seen the movie Outbreak to many times, but if I saw a random monkey just walking down the street, I would be a little alarmed. It seems that everyone not only careless that a stray monkey is loose on the street, but is nice to him. Hello? Has anyone heard of the diseases that monkeys carry. How come no one calls Animal Control? How come no crazy person opens fire on the little furry bastard. If that monkey was seen walking down my street I would have to pop a cap in it’s round ass. and then called the police and said that a stray monkey was trying to steal balloons from this nice man who was trying to sell them. Case closed.  Sorry George!

3. How can a monkey be that damn curious?

I think this monkey is one of those retired circus monkeys. He seems to get into everything. I don’t think monkeys could every tight rope across power lines. Come on people! How dumb do you think young readers are? There is no way that a monkey could get into that much mischief in one day with out the following situations happening. Either being shot, getting electrocuted, getting put in a cage by animal control, and finally being deported back to the jungle.

4. How come this monkey does not get punished?

It think that if you prank call the fire department, steal a bunch of balloons, and sneak out of an apartment you need to have your ass torn up or your ass on the next boat back to the jungle. In this story no one seems to care about all the mischief this little monkey caused. They are all seen huddled around him and The Man With The Yellow Hat smiling. Also, would the events in this story not tell TMWTYH that having a monkey live with him is not a good idea? You can’t even trust that a monkey will stay put in your apartment. A better question is why would you ever trust a monkey anyways? Did you see Aladdin? Abu did make The Cave of Wonders melt right? My point just got made!

I do love the story of this monkey. As a kid, I was obsessed with this book and loved it when my parents read it to me. Now that I am an adult, I look forward to reading this to Karsyn and seeing her face light up as my favorite monkey gets into to trouble. I know that this is a children’s book and it’s suppose to be fun and not be real but sometimes you can’t help but wonder what in the hell people are thinking.

(#5) The Gender Is Revealed

20120901-222813.jpg

Well it’s been 20 weeks in the making and I mean that literally. Finally Brittney and I were going to find out the sex of our baby. We have been so excited for this moment and could not wait to call our kid by their real name instead of referring to them as “IT” all the time.

When we got to the doctor’s office we just could not wait to get back there and found a since of relief as the girl called our name. We went back in a rather large room and Brittney jump on the table and pulled her shirt up like a pro. As the technician was performing the ultrasound we held hands and smiled at the glimpse of our baby’s growth. It is amazing watching it move around. When the technician finally told us what we were having, we both looked at each other and smiled.

Before Brittney got pregnant she told me that she wanted to do a Gender Reveal Party. I have never heard of these and if I am being honest here, I thought that it sounded stupid. I did go along with the idea.

For anyone who does not know what this type of party consist of, please let me tell you. You bake a cake with the inside dyed either pink or blue and call your families and either go out to dinner or host one at your house. Real simple right? The hardest part is keeping it a secret until the party.

We chose to have our dinner at Olive Garden in Monroe. Both of our families came and we enjoyed a really nice meal with light conversation. Then the moment everyone was waiting for. The cake! We brought the cake out and had our families gather around as Brittney and I cut into it and revealed that it was………

A GIRL!!!!!

Brittney and I are so happy to announce that we are going to have a daughter. Our families are very excited and can’t wait to welcome the newest addition to the clan. Now with only 20 more weeks left to go, I can say that I am truly excited to hold my baby girl for the first time. Karsyn Leigh Funderburke is going to be real daddy’s girl and I am sure I will be wrapped around her finger. Can’t wait! She makes my heart melt already!
