Saturday Adventures In CLT

One of the coolest things about my job is that I get to go to new places and meet a lot of cool people. It also helps when you get to eat the newest foods from the best local restaurants.

This past Saturday my wife and I wanted to get out of the house as we have spent the last two weekends at home. I am usually one to stay home as I love to be in my recliner watching the latest episodes of Mickey Mouse and Sophia the First. That is a total lie and any parent that tell you differently is a total liar. At around noon and after we got the house cleaned we all got dress and loaded the car and went on a little adventure.

Since I work really close with the website C5 I get recommendations on restaurants all the time as most of our most popular stories are about new restaurant opening and new items on local menus. One of my reps told me about Bang Bang Burgers and that I was going to have to try it. I love a good burger anyways so this was the first place in our list.

I knew I was in for a real good meal when the parking lot was full. Also, when we entered the restaurant we noticed there was not an open table to be found. We placed our order and waited against the wall for a table to open up. I guess that is what we get for going to lunch at 1 pm. Finally a family got up from a booth and we slid in as they walked out the door.

We got the kids situated and got our drinks and waited patiently for our food. When the food came, which was really fast, I was really impressed with how everything looked. My wife and I both got the pimento cheeseburgers while the kids stuffed their faces with chicken nuggets. Big shocker there.

The food was awesome. The burgers were very flavorful and the sauces they give you were amazing. I personally liked the Bang Bang sauce and their ranch. So good and my kids loved their nuggets.

After lunch, we got back in the car and rode over to the Dillworth area cause I wanted my wife to try the amazing Duck Doughnuts. I am a huge doughnut fan and I love trying locally made doughnuts. Their is nothing better then supporting local business in your area and it helps if they have a really tasty product.

When we got to the store it was also busy. People were everywhere and we finally got up to the counter to place out order. My wife and I decided to get a dozen so we could have breakfast on Sunday morning also. We ordered a wide variety from my personal favorite which is the maple bacon doughnut to the French toast flavored doughnut. My kids got a strawberry one and a chocolate covered glazed one.

The only thing about our experience was that they lost our ticket and we waited for over 20 minutes before they noticed that we were waiting. Now I am never one to complain at restaurants and I did not. The manager took it upon herself to come out and apologize and gave us a card for a free doughnut. That was nice and very thoughtful.

We sat at the bar by the front window and ate some of our doughnuts and enjoyed each others company. My kids loved their doughnuts cause they came out fresh and warm. They kept telling me how much they like it and that they wanted to come back. I told we would but I want to try some of the other local doughnut places first.

When we for back in the car my kids fell asleep and my wife and I headed home. That was enough adventure for one day. We already started planning our next one and can’t seem to decide where to go next. I will keep you posted.

Back At It

So it has been a while since my last post but I am back. A lot has happened since my last post. My family and I have been very busy and things don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.

First, Happy New Year, I missed writing this blog, I missed you, yada, yada, yada. I am not going to waste my time or yours writing about goals for 2018 as if I was going to try and stick to them anyways.

It is really hard to find the words to put on the screen. Usually it is pretty easy but I am finding it hard these past few months to find my voice again. I really hate to waste your time so lets start with some updates.

K-Dub has been enrolled in dance and LOVES IT! All she talks about is dance class and her teacher. She is really cute in her outfit and to watch glide across the floor. She just turned five and the attitude is starting to be more intense. I cant believe that it will not be long before she is in Kindergarten. Where has the time gone? She still is a Daddy’s girl and I love every minute of it.

Evie is Evie. She is still mean as a snake. The best way to describe her is that she is a sour patch kid. She hits you in the face one minute and then the next she is hugging your arm and telling you she loves you. She is not a big fan of me but a die hard follower of my wife. She loves my wife. Her new thing now is to fight going to bed. When she commits to hating something she really commits to it.

BrittWhitFun is still the same. She is the leader of the pack. She spends her days working and calculating schedules and making lunches in the evening. She keeps our family going and I really have no clue what I would do without her. She is awesome.

As for me…My job has taken off in a very different direction then I ever thought would be possible as I am now more then ever in the core of my magazines. South Park Magazine has really taken off and we just had Greg Olson on this months cover. Carolina Bride has a new editor and I am working very close to her to get our magazine in front of as many eyes as possible.  In addition to working with the magazines I am also coordinating events which puts me in front of some new people and new places. I think this is by far the most fun thing about my job.

As far as fitness goes I have been in slump for the past few months. I have given up Crossfit and decided to journey out on my own. So far I am just not feeling it. I have however been focussing on my nutrition very heavy. Trying to find what works best for me and how different food affect my body. Once I find a new balance I will get back to it.

Very thankful to be here working hard to be a better me.

Date Night, Cookouts, And Ripped Pants

This weekend was very busy as all our weekends are. It seems that my wife and I are busier then ever. We spend most of our weekends trying to hurry and get the laundry and cleaning done on Saturday morning so we can have fun a relax the rest of the time off we have together. This weekend was no different.

My wife had her company BBQ on Saturday at one of her doctors horse farms. It was a heart little BBQ complete with games, kegs of beer, pony rides, and lots of food. Naturally I headed to the keg while the kids played games. We mingled through the crowd. I talked to an old classmate from high school for a bit. It was nice. It was also VERY HOT. As the sweat started to bleed through my shirt I knew it was time to leave. I think the girls had fun.

After we got home and got the chance to dry off, my SIL E came over and watched the kids for us so my wife and I could go out and have a nice dinner just the two of us.

It was nice to get away with my love and stuff our faces with chicken, steak, and chocolate cake. It was not on my approved eating clean diet but well worth it.

Sunday was a blur. We went to the Another Broken Egg Cafe and had a great breakfast that reminded me a lot of our Charleston trip. Then we went home where the kids took a long nap, my went to the grocery store, and we relaxed at the pool for a couple of hours.

After getting the kids settled for dinner my wife asked me to pick up some Sabor Latin Street Grill for dinner so I headed up to Wesley Chapel. Once I got our food and started to climb in my truck I heard a rip. I looked down and my shorts had ripped all the way down the seam of the crotch.

Besides ripping my pants my weekend was great. I would be lying if I said that has never happened to me before. I hope your weekend was as fun and crazy as mine was.

Happy Thursday!

#MedalMonday- Rocktoberfest Half Marathon 2016

First, let me ay I am sorry I missed last weeks Medal Monday. The hoilday threw off my blogging schedule but here we are starting a new week.

This week I  am recaping my last race in the six pack series I did last year and that is the Rocktoberfest Half Marathon. This is a big race cause it usually is about two weeks before the big Charlotte Marathon. It is a lot of fun but the race is a challenge.

When the race started I thought I was going to be fine. That was until I got to mile three. I had to pee and there were not portajohns in sight. So I ran to mile five, then mile six, them mile eight, then at mile nine which was an top hill struggle peed behind a parked car on the street. I am pretty sure everyone knew what I was doing.

From miles nine to 12 it felt like the corse was completely up hill and I thought I was going to die. The course crossed over Independence Blvd and down Old Charlotte Highway back to Kings Drive where the race was finally over. That seemed like a long finish but when I arrived I was glad to have accomplished something so great.

For anyone who loves a course full of hills then this is the race for you. Just go to the bathroom first.

#MedalMonday- Yiasou Greek Festival 5K

This week I am talking about the famous Yiasou Greek Festival 5k. This race is part of the six pack series that Run For Your Life sponsors. Its one of the six medals I got last year. The food is as good as the race. It also happens to be the latest 5k in Charlotte.

That morning I found my way to the race with the usual signs of a contestant. I had to pee like I do with all races and like always, you have to wait in line. The lines for the bathroom are always long at these races. I think it is due to the fact that they sell out fast.

After using the bathroom and chilling before the race, it was time to line up and get going.

The race was run and the course was fairly easy. I remember all the cars parked in the street and how some people were running into them as they were trying to pass people.

The race was short but it was a 5k so what do you expect. Once I crossed the finish line I got my medal and had a beer under a tree. I stayed a while and ate some really good greek food before heading home.

If anyone is looking for a simple, flat, and fun 5k in Charlotte then this race is for you. It is nothing fancy but a lot of fun.

Happy Monday! Lets get this week!

#MedalMonday- 2016 Charlotte Half Marathon

This was one of those races that did not end very well for me. We all have these types of races. When we wish we did better or if there was something we could have done differently to prepare. I actually never talked about this race on the blog before but better time then today.

I got my stuff ready the night before like I do with any race. I got up and got dressed and headed to the train station. It was a cold November morning but the closer I got to Uptown the more excited I was getting.

This was my last race of the 2016 season before I took a break. It was my 10th race of the year overall. I was ready to be done before it even started. The truth is that the Charlotte Half Marathon is my favorite course ever. The beautiful neighborhoods of Myers Park, Dillworth, and then the home stretch through South End. It is also challenging with the big hills.

One of the cool things about this race was all the people on the sidelines cheering you on. That was incredible.

I was doing fine. Running at a steady pace. I stopped at the water stations and got some Gatorade. Nothing was going to stop me. I was going to finish this race.

Everything was fine from miles 1 to 11 and then it took a dark turn. When running through South End my legs started to cramp. I never had this happen to me before. It was the most intense pain I have ever experience in my legs. So here I am on mile 12 limping to the finish line.

I made it and I was so glad. It was a good race all things considering. I even got another medal for completing this and the Rocktoberfest Half Marathon but we will talk about that one later.

I love this race as it holds dear to my heart. I did the complete marathon the year before. If you are looking for a fun race in Charlotte in November then sign up for The Charlotte Half Marathon cause it will not disappoint.

Happy Monday Guys!

New Beginning, Something New

Anyone that has had a conversation with me over the past couple of months knows that I have been looking to do something else career wise. I have been doing a lot of soul searching, praying, and talking to my wife but I could just not seem to make up my mind what I wanted to do.

I have been at the local paper here in Charlotte for over 2 years working in the Advertising Department. I am in charge of all legal classifieds, weddings and celebrations, worship directory, backing up obituaries and classified call center for not only Charlotte but multiple surrounding  papers also. I love what I do. I am really good at managing so much on my plate at one time and I never miss a deadline, however I was getting burned out and I did not know how much longer I could keep going.

An opportunity crossed my path recently and I had give it a try. The magazine staff was looking for a new account and layout coordinator. I had no real expectations but decided to throw my name in the hat to see what would happened. Soon my name spread like wildfire on the 11th floor and everyone was super excited for me so naturally, I got excited also.

Two weeks later I was called in for an interview. The manger made me feel comfortable like I was talking to a friend. I explained to her why I was looking for a change and I left thinking it went very well.

Monday I was called in and… I GOT THE JOB!

So now I will be moving into a new role at paper working with the amazing magazine staff. I am so excited to start and look forward to what the future holds for me and my little family.

Finally A Date Night

My wife and I never get to have a date night. It has been really hard to schedule one. We are usually decide last minute to have a date night and find it hard to find a sitter. So we don’t get to go out together very much.

When we do get to go out we often find ourselves at one of our favorite little secrets in Charlotte. That is this little place in the Metropolitan area called Dressler’s. Now it is on the pricey side but they usually have a Groupon out there to purchase. The Groupon is dinner for two for $69, which includes two appetizers, a salad to share, two main courses, and a desert to share. It is a lot of food but the food is what makes the trip.

One of my favorite items on the menu is the blackened ribeye. It is so good with the blue cheese butter and the side of fingerling potatoes and asparagus really complment the dish. I know this is not a restaurant review but you have to try it.

I love spending time with this girl. She is so funny and I smile when she talks. I just love it when she talks. We had some drinks before dinner and just sat and relaxed with no kids grabbing our legs and saying “Mommy”, “Daddy”. It was very refreshing to just sit with your spouse and have a real conversation about something other then nap schedules and diaper rashes.

Our dinner was so good and the conversation was uplifting. This was short lived when we got a call from our sitter to say that the dogs got a hold of the trashcan with dirty diapers in it and the whole house smelled like crap. Straight up crap. So we headed home and cleaned it up. It was a not so good end to a great night but at least I got alone time with my bride.

Spartan Sprint To Victory- Reaper Crew!

So this past weekend I had the honor of doing something different. I ran a Spartan Race! I did not know what to expect but I was excited to do something different.

I do have to be honest about something. I am not a huge fan of obstacle races. I just don’t like them and I kind of think of them as a joke. I just imagine myself as a fifth grader running on the school yard during field day. I just did not understand everyones obsession with these races. That was until I did one myself.

Let me start by just stating that there is no way I would EVER do one of these races by myself or in a competitive setting.

When my team(Reaper Crew) got to the farm we got checked in and received our bib number(which is this really tight headband that squeezes your head to no end) and trackers. We walked around the “festival” and saw all the beer vendors, merchandise, and other events marketing. It looked like a regular race like I was used to except one thing… People were just walking around hardly wearing anything. Guys with no shirt and compression shorts that left nothing to the imagination. The girls with tiny shorts and very low cut sports bras. It was like one big underwear party. Which would have made more sense if it was in the summer time but it was April and 49 degrees outside.

Our start time is 8:30 in the morning so we got hydrated, got our bib number tattooed on our arms and got ready to be called to the start line. Soon an old man told us the rules and people started jumping over the wall behind him to get to the start line. It was time to begin.

Once the man yelled out “GO” we were off. We kept a very easy yet challenging pace. I am not a trail runner so the terrain seemed a bit of an adjustment. Soon we came to the first set of obstacles which were big walls. I easily hurdled through those and made my way to the next wall which was way bigger. I need a little bit of a boast for that one.

The next few obstacles were easy. Jumping hay and climbing on rope ladders made me wonder if this was the hardest part of the race or if it was just the intro. I was right about the intro part. Soon the obstacles took a dark turn.

There was a peg wall where you had to get across and not let your feet touch the ground. That was hard so my teammate Larry held my ass and guided me across and I did the same for him. I did manage to still pull a muscle in my gluten.

Moving on from that we came to the bucket tote. This is where you fill your bucket full of rocks and carry them down a hill and then up a hill. It does not seem bad but you were not allowed to carry the bucket on your shoulders. I made it through first but my back wished I did not.

After a run through the woods we did a sled pull which was not problem and a sandbag carry up and down a hill. Soon we found ourselves walking in a creek and then coming to a hole of muddy water. We had to slide down into the mud pit and then climb up the mud mountain into another muddy water pit and then submerge ourselves under water to go under a wall to the other side. I was not smart here cause I did not feel for the opening under the wall and thought I was going to drown.

After I almost died we had to carry a muddy atlas stone and do burpees. This was also after we crawled under barbwire in more mud. I was completely brown at this point.

The next few obstacles were very standard. A weight pulley, a climbing rope(which was the hardest thing ever and I settled for 30 burpees instead), and a spear throw.

Finally we could see the end in sight. We did not another climbing rope ladder and then some impossible monkey bars. The we jumped over fire as a team and crossed the finish line and got our well deserved medal. If I am going to get absolutely disgusting then I better have some bling and a beer waiting on me at the other end. I did and it was awesome.

Would I ever do another one? Yes and no. I would if my team asked me to and no if I had to do it myself. The hardest part in my opinion other then the race was trying to get the mud off you. I was in the “shower area” getting pressure washed while joining the other people who stripped down to their underwear. Its was very revealing and also very human for me to put it all out there like that.

I enjoyed myself and my team but a spartan life is not one I would do annually, however it was a blast.

Crazy Week

This week has been crazy and it is only Wednesday. At least we have half way through the week. I think they call this “hump day”.

I am currently on a train heading into work after an intense crossfit partner workout. There was a lot of running, snatching, pulling up and of course sweat.

Saw my mom last night and she is doing much better. The doctors are saying she is going to be discharged today and sent to rehab. I can’t wait to see how she recovers after a week at rehab. She seemed in good sports last night despite having a bad headache and not being able to keep her eyes open. Keep the prayers coming.

I am super excited cause I got my email about packet pickup for the Greek Festival 5k today. So excited for this race. It’s going to be so much fun. This is the last short distance race of the year for me. The next few race are between 9 and 13 miles. Man I love running.

Got a lot of good content coming in the next few weeks so be on the lookout!
