#MedalMonday- 6 Pack Series Medal

Here we are. The past few weeks now I have recap my most favorite races. I have posted a ton of pictures from each race and of course taken pictures of the fronts and backs of all my medals Why the backs? Well one thing that was so cool about those medals was that they connect to make one big huge massive medal.

Completing this series of races last year was a huge accomplishment for me and I take pride in all the hard work I put to my 2016 race season. I am ready to brush off the running shoes soon to get ready for 2018 which is going to be a huge year for me. I am doing my first Triathlon, running the Star Wars Half Marathon in Disney World, and maybe a crossfit competition. 2017 I have taken a break from the race season to focus more on weight training but I will return an maybe in 2019 do the six pack series again.

#MedalMonday- Rocktoberfest Half Marathon 2016

First, let me ay I am sorry I missed last weeks Medal Monday. The hoilday threw off my blogging schedule but here we are starting a new week.

This week I  am recaping my last race in the six pack series I did last year and that is the Rocktoberfest Half Marathon. This is a big race cause it usually is about two weeks before the big Charlotte Marathon. It is a lot of fun but the race is a challenge.

When the race started I thought I was going to be fine. That was until I got to mile three. I had to pee and there were not portajohns in sight. So I ran to mile five, then mile six, them mile eight, then at mile nine which was an top hill struggle peed behind a parked car on the street. I am pretty sure everyone knew what I was doing.

From miles nine to 12 it felt like the corse was completely up hill and I thought I was going to die. The course crossed over Independence Blvd and down Old Charlotte Highway back to Kings Drive where the race was finally over. That seemed like a long finish but when I arrived I was glad to have accomplished something so great.

For anyone who loves a course full of hills then this is the race for you. Just go to the bathroom first.

Oak Island Lighthouse Half Marathon Recap

  
Well the third time is a charm as they say. I have to say that the highlight of my spring is heading down to Oak Island in April for a weekend with the family. Not only is this run very fun and challenging, it’s a great first half marathon for anyone wanting to try it. 

  
Packet pickup last year was at the Chamber of Commerce building. This year they decided to have it at the airport. It was a little hard to find for any out of town runner like myself but I found it. My wife has a great sense of direction.  The T-shirts this year are way better this year then last. They fit way better. I actually ordered a 2X cause I thought it was going to be like last years tight fitting shirts. 

  

I was a little worried going into this race cause I had pulled a muscle in my back on Wednesday and then pulled it again on Friday morning at crossfit. So I was in pain. I took some anti inflammatory pills and was feeling better but was I feeling 13.1 miles better? 

The morning of the race I was feeling confident. This was my third year running this race. I was a seasoned vet at this point. The race moved locations and now no longer required you to run over that big bridge but now required you to run to the NC Baptist Assembly and then turn around and come back. 

  
The buzzard went off and the race began. I kept a slow pace to the mile one marker as always so the crowd would start to thin. So many people this year. This race has grown so much in popularity over the years. Then I moved to my 8 minute pace and stayed there. I could feel my body getting comfortable with my pace. I smiled and I knew at the 3 mile marker that this was going to be my race. 

I ran faster and stronger then ever before. I stopped at ever water station and walked as I drank my water and then resumed my race like a boss. Soon I coming close to the turn around at mile 7 and it felt like forever for me to get there. Finally I reached it and I knew that now was the last phase of this race. I had to keep it together. 

  

On the way back I saw all the people I passed. They looked tired as I felt. I cheered them in as I passed them. Soon I was back in the residential area around the end of mile 8 and I knew I was almost done. Residents crowded along the streets with signs and yelling for us to have a great race. I was having the best race of my life. 

Soon I was on the way back to the road closest to the beach. I released I was on mile 12 and this was most over. I texted my wife and barley said “1mile left”. That was how it looked. They say the last mile is the hardest in any race and they are right. It seemed that mile took forever. 

Soon the finish line was in sight and I made it. My wife and kids greeted me and they handed me my find her medal which was a huge margarita glass. 

  
I loved the new course and the fact that I walked away from this race with a new PR for a half marathon. The medal is not an ideal finisher medal but great for a Jimmy Buffet themed race. 

  

  
  
After the race I changed clothes and we grabbed some taco and rode to Carolina Beach and got donuts at the magical place called Britt’s Donuts.

2016 Race Schedule

  
Well 2015 was a great year. I completed two milestones that I never thought possible. A lot of people have asked me what am I going to do now? To be completely honest I don’t really have a plan. I really want to focus on lifting but I can’t go a whole year without a little running. I also can’t run without bringing you guys along for the ride. 

This year is all about the bling when it comes to running. I got the itch after the marathon. I think I carried that heavy finisher metal around with me for two weeks. I was and I am still proud but I want more metals. So I have to earn them.

July 4- American 4 Miler

August 27- Yiasou Greek Festival 5K

October 15- Rocktoberfest Half Marathon

November 12- Thunder Road Marathon??

9 races and 9 metals for the year of 2016. I have not totally made up my mind about Thunder Road this year due mainly cause of the hard recovery I had afterwards. Those leg cramps are nothing to joke about. 

So I have about three weeks until the first race and I need to get started with my training. I know I can complete these races but I also don’t want to be over confident. I just need to run and more importantly have fun. 

So here is to a great race season. Be looking for my recap of the Super Bowl 4 Miler coming in a few weeks. 

Oak Island Half Marathon Run Recap

  

So I did it! I ran my first half marathon race! I am officially a half marathon runner!

First, let me say that I am sorry the blog entry from Friday never posted. It was a user error. I don’t like using the mobile blogging app and now I am reminded why.

Anyways, lets get to the race.

Saturday morning arrived. I was pumped and nervous at the same time. I could not wait to get started and show myself what I could do. I ate a good breakfast and drank some Amino Energy. I was ready and determined to do well!

When we arrived at the race, traffic was crazy trying to get in a get parked. With only 15 minutes until the race was going to start, I got out and stretched and walked up to the starting line. It was very cloudy outside. I was nervous it was going to rain and I was right.

  

The buzzard went off and the race had begun, I said to myself lets start at an easy pace and work our way up. When I reach to start of Caswell Road it began to rain. My glasses were covered in rain and my face was wet. By the time I reach mile 3 my shoes and socks were completely soaked. I knew I was in trouble.

At mile 4 you have to cross over the big bridge that connects Oak Island and Southport. I knew this bridge was going to be a challenge but carrying the extra weight from the water in my shoes was not going to help. I still manage to get over. I saw other people struggle to make it up. It made me feel that I was in good company. At one point a woman was leaning over the bridge blowing chunks. I felt bad but told myself that this was not going to be me. After making the loop around you had to go back over the bridge again. I made it over and was done with mile 6 when my calves started to feel as if they were on fire.

Miles 7- 9 were thru some residential areas. I remember thinking that this maze was never going to end. At mile 8 I stopped at a water station. The first time I stopped the complete race. I needed a minute to get myself together. My legs were on fire.

At mile 10 I knew I was not going to make it under the two hour mark liked I wanted to but I had to keep going. Pushing through the pain I jogged my way up to mile 12. One more mile is what I kept telling myself. ONE MORE MILE!!!

Soon the finish line was there and I could hear the cheers and see the people waiving at me. I pushed through and made it to the finish line with a smile on face. I happily accepted my medal that I earned. My total time was 2:35:05, which is not my best but through the crazy weather conditions, I will take it!

One thing this race taught me is that you can train all day every day but there are some things that are just not in your control. Finishing a race at any time is still finishing and you need to be proud of just that. At least I finished and I can say I ran a half marathon. I will be back next year! Its already on my calendar!

So what’s next for this runner? A much need break from running. I am think a couple of weeks to get my body back to where I need it to be. Then, I am going to start training for The Charlotte Thunder Road Marathon! That’s right 26.2 miles and I am both scared and excited! Wish me luck!

  

Training Is Almost Done! 

So my half marathon is this weekend! I can’t believe it’s almost here. It seems just yesterday I decided to take the leap and push myself to the max. Since my last post about my training I have been getting a lot of questions about how training is going and if I am improving. Here is my latest update.

So training has been hard. There has been days where I feel like I can’t do it. There are days where I am pumped and there has been days where I skip training all together. It’s just the way it is.

As many of you know I have been doing crossfit three days out of the week. It has been a lot of fun a really challenging. I have met a lot of cool people who have the same goals as me and they do a real great job of keeping me motivated. I was told by the owner that with doing crossfit and half marathon training I would see a huge improvement in my overall time. I did not believe him at all.

One thing that happened during my training was I got so crazy allergies. It caused me to not be able to run for two weeks. As I was starting to feel better I resumed my training I could not run long distance. I would get tired or feel as if I could not breathe. It made my confidence very low. I was getting worried if I could finish this half marathon or not.

I decided that I needed to do a practice run. So Sunday I decided to run 11 miles. I told my wife to be by her phone just in case I needed her to come get me. I made a real good start. Miles 1 thru 3 were easy. Then a crazy thing happened around mile 5. I was actually getting faster per minute. My pace was getting better and I was running a minute faster per mile. When I finished to mile 11 my total time was 1:42:36. I even beat my 10k and 5k records!

 

My confidence is back and I am ready to head to Oak Island. I have one more run that is tomorrow. It’s a 5 mile jog and I am excited to get it out of the way. I feel this could be my best run yet!

Half Marathon Training Has Started!

So I only have a little over four months till my next race so I have begun training like crazy.

If you remember last year I decided to run my first race ever which was a 5k in Oak Island. I worked my butt off by following a training plan. I would come home from work and run around the neighborhood before dinner. When the race came I ended up coming 3rd in my age division. I was so pleased. Hard work paid off in a big way. My second 5k race I came in 5th. So 2014 was a great race season but now I am ready to take it further.

I ran 13.1 miles back in September just to see if I could do it and I did. I ran it in 2:30:00. It’s not bad but there is definitely room for improvement. So I bought a treadmill for my garage to train during the cold months.

So far training is going wonderful. It’s nice to be back in the habit of running. Also I get to catch up on some of my favorite Netflix shows while I run.
