The past couple of days I have been obsessed with making my house smarter. I have researched this for the past few weeks and decided on a few products that I wanted.
The first thing I got was a camera. I put this thing in the house and now I have a live view of what is going on at all times. Its great for when I want to look in on the dogs or if I want to know what is going on when I am away.
The second thing I got was electronic lock for the door. This lets me know when my doors are locked and who unlocked it. I can even give guest an individual digital key so they can come in anytime. It automatically locks when my wife and I leave and are in so many feet from the house.
Now I have some upcoming projects around the house to make it more smarter and energy efficient. I want to get a wifi enabled garage door opener, some wifi outlets and some energy saving light bulbs. Maybe I could cut down on my electric bill by doing this.
Have you made your house a little smarter? Tell me about it.
This weekend I spent the majority of my Saturday cleaning up the garage cause it was very crowded. I can’t tell you how much stuff I threw away. Things that I have no clue why we were holding on to. Broken toys, chairs, and old bags with empty sunscreen bottles in them. It was time for a clean and purge.
After almost two hours of sweating I finally got my garage about 85% the way I wanted it. I read an article that it is recommended to clean out your a house every three years. I actually believe this. We have been in our home for over three years so you can imagine what I was dealing with.
One thing that this article recommend was to sell your old stuff. I was pretty excited to to this so I listed my old elliptical, some decorate pics, my bike, and old coffee maker. I was happy to say that I sold my elliptical for $80!
I was really glad to be rid of that thing as I never used it. Now I have the cleaning bug. This weekend I am going to clean put mine and my wife’s closet to what other things I have that I could get rid of.
When my wife and I built our house one of the things I really wanted was hardwood floors. I hate carpet and I think dining rooms that have carpet is extremely dumb. Well, it was hella expensive to do them at the time so we decided to wait.
Three years later we finally were able to get them. Last week I share they were about to be installed and how my wife and I spent the great portion of our night backing and moving things off the floor. It was a nightmare. I was so sore on Friday morning when I woke up that I almost did not make it through my morning workout.
Now as you read yesterday, we were at the beach all weekend. We came home and found our house in total disarray. The couches were moved to the side, the table was blocking the back door and everything and I mean EVERYTHING was covered in dust.
We spent about 2 to 3 hours after getting home from the beach arranging furniture and dusting off all the surfaces. All the cups and dishes that were left on the counters had to be washed again. It was crazy. I was tired after being on gone all weekend.
There is a plus to every story and that is that I LOVE my new floors and I think they make my house look amazing.
Sorry that today’s post is late. My wife and I are in the process of finishing our renovation project in the house. We are in the beginning phases of getting hardwood installed on our first floor, up the stairs and the second floor landing.
Why has this been a nightmare. Shortly after agreeing with the contractor last night we were told that we had to remove all the stuff off the floor of our pantry, hall closet, and dining room. The only problem is that the pantry is overstocked, the hall closet is more of a junk closet, and the dining room is more of a playroom with a ton of toys in it. It is a little embarrassing to talk about but even Monica Geller had a secret junk closet.
This would be an easy task to accomplish if we did not have appointments on Thursday and Friday night and if we were not planning to leave for the beach on Friday. This is the problem. Last night my wife and I tackled the hall closet and dumped most of it to a temporary home in the garage/home gym. Tonight I am riding solo as the wife is getting her hair done and I have the kids all to myself. My task that I was given was to finish the rest by myself.
This is going to make for a fun evening. Happy Thursday! I think I need more of this…
This week I was finally able to put the finishing touches on K-Dub’s bathroom. After a long few weeks of going back and forth on theme, BritWhitFun and I decided to decorate it in an owl theme. We went to Target and Wal-Mart and looked at some of their prices and finally decided that Target was going to be our best bet. With everything we chose we ended up spending about $100 to make this really neat design idea a reality. The only thing pictured is the faucet cover.
Now that this bathroom is complete, its time to move on to the next room which is the playroom. This is going to take some time but I hope to have it done by Christmas. I wish this one was going to be as easy as going to Target and buying matching stuff. That would make my life a lot easier. I do want to get some new bookcases so if anyone knows where I can get some good ones for a low price, please let me know.
So yesterday I shared that BritWhitFun and I spent our weekend celebrating our favorite season of the year. We took K-Dub to the pumpkin patch and got some pumpkins to decorate the front of the house. If was an all day process on Monday but there was one thing our little front door display was missing. After much debate and brainstorming, I decided to find a scarecrow and put it on the bale of hay. This sounds easy right? I had no idea that this was going to be a journey of epic proportions.
Our journey started after we left the pumpkin patch. I was so excited that I could barely contain myself. I love holidays and decorating is so much fun! Our first stop was a Big Lots. We ran inside thinking that they would be at the center of the store. After about five minutes of walking we could not find the Halloween stuff. We walked to the back corner to find one aisle of Halloween decorations but no scarecrows. I went to the other side of the aisle to find a Christmas bomb had went off for the next three aisles. If you remember last year when I wrote about how it was not even Thanksgiving yet and Christmas was already everywhere. I guess this year the Christmas rush is starting early.
After we left Big Lots feeling sad, we rode over to Wal-Mart and ran into the garden center area to find it had been redecorated for Christmas. Nothing fall related was out. I could not believe it. I had to walk all the way to the front of the store only to find that the only outside decorations they had were those tacky inflatable ones. I was starting to feel that this was a lost cause.
The last place we checked was Dollar General and that was a bust. I got home and felt defeated. I asked my Facebook friends where to find a scarecrow. Most of them said to go to Old Time Pottery or AC Moore. I will be making the trip this weekend. It amazes me how stores are already done with Halloween, skipped Thanksgiving and already set for Christmas. On the bright side I did get some amazing Duke ornaments for my tree this year.
Update I found a scarecrow today at Old Time Pottery.
Sorry it has been too long since my last entry. I have now moved everything in the new house and we are almost all the way unpacked. I have most of the room completely done but there are a few big ones like my bedroom where I am still trying to find places to put stuff. I knew we were going to have more space but I never thought we would have so much of it.
The best thing about moving into a newly built house is that everything is brand new. From the floors to the appliances, you know you are the first person to use it. I like that very much considering I don’t have to worry about any issues for a few years. I also like that when I am upstairs I can’t hear anything downstairs. This make TV watching and relaxing much easier. Finally I am able to use my living room again!
Unfortunately, there are more bad things that come with a new house. I am constantly finding things wrong that should not be the way they are. For example, my wife goes to brush her teeth in out now double sink bathroom (yes I am so excited about that!!) and finds that her sink only gives out hot water. Also, my mother-in-law stayed with us recently and went to take a shower in the kids bathroom and the metal cover where the water comes out shoot across the tub and cuts her foot! Plumbing has not been the only issue. It’s hard to get mail delivered on a street that has been built recently cause it does not show up on any GPS, It took me two weeks and nine phone calls to get my trash service to deliver my new cans. I also had to deal with new construction the street behind us, which is so loud that the baby can’t seem to take her naps.
The whole buying a house experience has been one I would still do over again if I had to. There is something very rewarding about owning your own home. B and I are very happy to have a place to call home and that we have no more packing and moving in our future anytime soon.
#2 Buy a House- Completed on 09/13/2013
On another note, I know things have been very crazy lately with me and I have not posted anything in a while. I have been thinking of changing the name of this blog to something that reflects my personality a lot more. I also want to post more and since now I have the time to do it, I want to take advantage of it. I do apologize for my long absence and I am proud to say that I am back and newly committed to the blog. I have some great new stories as well as some new recipes that feature my new love, my crock pot! So if any of you are still keeping up with this blog, I ask you not to give up on me. I am back and ready to blog!
The past few months have been nuts. Everything from packing to constantly having to check on the construction to of the new house, to having to make sure the mortgage people have everything they need has been a not so welcome stress to our lives. I never thought that planning a move could be so crazy. I used to have no problem finding the time to pack and clean the house. That was before I had a kid too.
Brittney and I are in the last phase of the completion of our new home. We are so excited. We go by the construction site almost 3 times a week and are amazed with how fast these people are putting our home together. One day we went and we had our kitchen cabinets, the next day we had our sinks and toilets, and then a few days later we had a front lawn with a new mailbox.
Things have not all been perfect with the construction process. We have found outlets in the wrong place, windows that have been broken, and we found that our outlet covers are being put on in weird ways. So far they have not been fixed but we are told that they have to be fixed before they inspect the house so we are hoping soon.
Packing our home now has been no easy task. We did get the closets cleaned out and everything off the walls but we still have to tackle the big things like the kitchen and Karsyn’s room. Our garage is full of things we are either trying to sell or give away. Some of the stuff we are keeping like some really nice end tables.
The most satisfying part of this whole thing is the moment I gave our rental company our 30 day notice. Now I have some things to figure our like when to cut the cable, power, renter’s insurance, and internet off so we can set up new services with some new providers at the new house. I have to be able to access the net and watch my shows. I have a list that is so long of things that need to be done that I finally broke down and asked my wife for help.
Regardless of our house looking like a bomb went off, I think that if I just keep a level head and take one challenge at a time I will be able to make this move with no issue. I will be listening to a lot of rest and relaxation music the next few weeks to keep me from flying off the handle so pray I make it through. Hopefully the next time I post it will be from the comfort of my new living room.
Brittney and I have had a busy year. We have become parents and now we are working in phase two of our plan. We are building a house.
This picture was taken two weeks ago and now there is more to our house than this. We have walls, doors, and windows now. We are so excited to be in a new home in a little under two months.
We are now in the process of pick things out for the new house like paint, lighting and furniture. We have a lot of work ahead of us and we also have a lot of hard decisions. I will post more pictures as the house is going up.
Have a good day and talk to you all soon. I have some other great stories to tell so stay tuned.
