Saturday Adventures In CLT

One of the coolest things about my job is that I get to go to new places and meet a lot of cool people. It also helps when you get to eat the newest foods from the best local restaurants.

This past Saturday my wife and I wanted to get out of the house as we have spent the last two weekends at home. I am usually one to stay home as I love to be in my recliner watching the latest episodes of Mickey Mouse and Sophia the First. That is a total lie and any parent that tell you differently is a total liar. At around noon and after we got the house cleaned we all got dress and loaded the car and went on a little adventure.

Since I work really close with the website C5 I get recommendations on restaurants all the time as most of our most popular stories are about new restaurant opening and new items on local menus. One of my reps told me about Bang Bang Burgers and that I was going to have to try it. I love a good burger anyways so this was the first place in our list.

I knew I was in for a real good meal when the parking lot was full. Also, when we entered the restaurant we noticed there was not an open table to be found. We placed our order and waited against the wall for a table to open up. I guess that is what we get for going to lunch at 1 pm. Finally a family got up from a booth and we slid in as they walked out the door.

We got the kids situated and got our drinks and waited patiently for our food. When the food came, which was really fast, I was really impressed with how everything looked. My wife and I both got the pimento cheeseburgers while the kids stuffed their faces with chicken nuggets. Big shocker there.

The food was awesome. The burgers were very flavorful and the sauces they give you were amazing. I personally liked the Bang Bang sauce and their ranch. So good and my kids loved their nuggets.

After lunch, we got back in the car and rode over to the Dillworth area cause I wanted my wife to try the amazing Duck Doughnuts. I am a huge doughnut fan and I love trying locally made doughnuts. Their is nothing better then supporting local business in your area and it helps if they have a really tasty product.

When we got to the store it was also busy. People were everywhere and we finally got up to the counter to place out order. My wife and I decided to get a dozen so we could have breakfast on Sunday morning also. We ordered a wide variety from my personal favorite which is the maple bacon doughnut to the French toast flavored doughnut. My kids got a strawberry one and a chocolate covered glazed one.

The only thing about our experience was that they lost our ticket and we waited for over 20 minutes before they noticed that we were waiting. Now I am never one to complain at restaurants and I did not. The manager took it upon herself to come out and apologize and gave us a card for a free doughnut. That was nice and very thoughtful.

We sat at the bar by the front window and ate some of our doughnuts and enjoyed each others company. My kids loved their doughnuts cause they came out fresh and warm. They kept telling me how much they like it and that they wanted to come back. I told we would but I want to try some of the other local doughnut places first.

When we for back in the car my kids fell asleep and my wife and I headed home. That was enough adventure for one day. We already started planning our next one and can’t seem to decide where to go next. I will keep you posted.

Back At It

So it has been a while since my last post but I am back. A lot has happened since my last post. My family and I have been very busy and things don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.

First, Happy New Year, I missed writing this blog, I missed you, yada, yada, yada. I am not going to waste my time or yours writing about goals for 2018 as if I was going to try and stick to them anyways.

It is really hard to find the words to put on the screen. Usually it is pretty easy but I am finding it hard these past few months to find my voice again. I really hate to waste your time so lets start with some updates.

K-Dub has been enrolled in dance and LOVES IT! All she talks about is dance class and her teacher. She is really cute in her outfit and to watch glide across the floor. She just turned five and the attitude is starting to be more intense. I cant believe that it will not be long before she is in Kindergarten. Where has the time gone? She still is a Daddy’s girl and I love every minute of it.

Evie is Evie. She is still mean as a snake. The best way to describe her is that she is a sour patch kid. She hits you in the face one minute and then the next she is hugging your arm and telling you she loves you. She is not a big fan of me but a die hard follower of my wife. She loves my wife. Her new thing now is to fight going to bed. When she commits to hating something she really commits to it.

BrittWhitFun is still the same. She is the leader of the pack. She spends her days working and calculating schedules and making lunches in the evening. She keeps our family going and I really have no clue what I would do without her. She is awesome.

As for me…My job has taken off in a very different direction then I ever thought would be possible as I am now more then ever in the core of my magazines. South Park Magazine has really taken off and we just had Greg Olson on this months cover. Carolina Bride has a new editor and I am working very close to her to get our magazine in front of as many eyes as possible.  In addition to working with the magazines I am also coordinating events which puts me in front of some new people and new places. I think this is by far the most fun thing about my job.

As far as fitness goes I have been in slump for the past few months. I have given up Crossfit and decided to journey out on my own. So far I am just not feeling it. I have however been focussing on my nutrition very heavy. Trying to find what works best for me and how different food affect my body. Once I find a new balance I will get back to it.

Very thankful to be here working hard to be a better me.

#MedalMonday-Running For Cancer & Family Bonfires

I have not ran since last November as I have taken this year to build my strength and to take a step back from the competitive running circuit. It has not been an easy thing but I am confident that when it comes time to train I will be ready.

My SIL asked me a couple of months ago if I would like to run a 5k with her as she has gotten a hold of the fitness bug and wanted to do. I said ok as I am never going to turn down a chance to support someone wanting to better themselves.

The race we chose was the Run For Kids Cancer 5K in Ballantyne. The event was cool and there was plenty of stuff for the kids to do.

Soon the race was on and we did good. I ran at my SIL pace and we took our time.

Soon we finished and got some pretty awesome medals. I must say it felt great to once again cross the finish line.

Later that day we celebrated with a bonfire, pizza and s’mores.

My Mountain Expedition

A couple of weeks ago my friend Stephen and I decided to not only go camping in the mountains but to hike one of the toughest sections on the Appalachian Trail.

I have never camped before and I am not one to rough it but Stephen is military so I figured if I had any questions or feared being trampled by a deer then this guys would help me through it.

We drove Friday night up to a hostile in Tennessee after work. We got there very late and found a camping spot by the river to set up our tent. We built a fire to keep warm and quickly fell asleep.

The next morning we walked up to the owners house where we were feed a great breakfast that included homemade from scratch blueberry pancakes, hash brown casserole, egg soufflé, and sausage and gravy biscuits. I of course had to have my coffee. Breakfast was well greeted by great conversation with the locals.

After packing out backpacks with much needed items and a couple of beers we got in the shuttle and headed up to the mountain to begin our climb to Carver’s Gap.

The moment we begun hiking on the trail we were in awe of the great views.

We met some people on the trail and had some great conversations and people gave us advice on how to proceed and where we needed to get the freshest water. We then made the plan to camp on Big Hump Mountain that night and then head back down the mountain in the morning.

We finally made our journey up Big Hump Mountain which was a hard climb. I had to stop a couple of times to rest but the views at the top made it worth it.

Once we made it to the top we got out of sleeping bags, changed into some dry less sweaty clothes and took a rest. The sunset was amazing. It was so quite and peaceful that nigh. The stars were so bright and close it felt like you could reach up and pull them out of the sky. The hours I did sleep I was awaken by the sound of deer walking by and then running off quickly when they realized I was watching them.

The next morning we awoke to an amazing sunrise before packing our stuff and heading back down the mountain. The views coming down the mountain were awesome.

After walking about 6 miles we finally got back to highway and to our car.

My first camping trip was awesome and I can’t wait to plan the next one at another location.

Weekend Training, Cheat Meals, Projects & Other Wild Times

I live for the weekends. Every week my wife and I are on the go from the time we wake up to the time we finally hit the hay. There usually is no down time during the week. The highlight of our conversations is usually about what to make for dinner and I am sorry that is just not a conversation I want to have at 7 am. By the time Friday comes I am an over worked zombie and need a nap. I think a lot of parents who work full time feel this way.

When Saturdays come I am very much excited as I am not going to be awaken by the harsh sound of my alarm clock but to the tapping on my head by my oldest who wants to go downstairs and watch TV. To be 100% honest here, nine times out of ten I tell her to wake her mom up. I know I am a horrible human being.

This weekend I got up and went to the gym first thing. It was leg day and I wanted to go ahead and get it in first thing. After pounding out some deadlifts and other exercises, I went and got some coffee cause no workout should go not unrewarded.

We decided to take the kids to the park and let then run all their energy out. This was a great idea considering we ended up having a solid 30 minutes of the park to ourselves. I ended up being the master of the kids zip line. The park stated to fill up but we stayed and played. I swung with Evie and Wife slid down the slide with K-Dub.

The kids were tired so we headed home for a quick nap before going to lunch. Not just any lunch. It was a lunch to celebrate by SIL who turned 25! Lunch was at the best Mexican restaurant that is local her in Indian Trail. It real is life changing Mexican food. The kids were disaster between Evie putting her hands in salsa and then rubbing Wife’s shirt and K-Dub having to go to the bathroom, I was done and ready to take the demons home but we had to go to Target first.

We have been working on this Coffee bar project for sometime and we finally found the right model we wanted to get. So I spent the next couple of hours after Target building it and I am so glad it is done.

We still have a couple of things to do but in the end I think we are off to a great start to a new favorite spot for Wife and I at our house. We survive on coffee and the more the better.

Sunday night I had been waiting for my cheat meal. All week in fact and I wanted a burger, fries and a milkshake and I finally got it. My wife treated me to American Burger Co. in Sun Valley. I have to say it was worth it. My burger was called “Hot Mess” which is what I was as I devoured that thing. So worth it.

Now we are back in the grind of work and here we are on Wednesday. lucky for us we only have one more day of work as we are off for a four day weekend!!! Yay!

Football, Splash Pads, & Life Lessons

Let me start by saying that I am sorry for not following up on this past weeks blogs. Things have been nuts around the house and and trying to find the time to blog and update you guys has become difficult but I will talk about that later.

Picking up from my previous entry, the past few weeks we were grieving the loss of Tanner and things are still not the same. You would think with all the losses that my family and I have had that we would be come pros with dealing with grief but it still is easy and I have come to the conclusion that it never will be.

Many people know that my relationship with my brother has never been the best and I am not going into much detail about it but just know that we did finally have a talk and decided that we don’t always have to hang out or see each other every day. I can work with this. After mending some fences he invited me to the open preseason Panther game and you know I love my Carolina Panthers!

I had a great time. Too much of a great time and maybe should have never drank that 6th beer. Anyways, I was really glad to spend some time with him and enjoy some football also.

Finally the weekend came along and we had another birthday party to go to. This time it was for my other niece Charlee as it was her birthday. I can’t believe my niece is going to be in 1st grade this year! Where has the time gone?

The party was fun and even I got on the splash pad and got soaked. My girls had a blast and it was great to be around family and friends.

One thing that I never stop doing is learning. I always try to learn life lessons and sometimes I learn thing even when I don’t want to. I have learned that no matter what happens to just forgive and move on. That does not mean keeping the person around but to not let that hurt control your everyday life. Just let it go. Now sometimes it is harder then others and I struggle myself sometimes but you need to let it go.

The other lesson I learned was to stay out of God’s business and other people’s business and just worry about your business. This has helped me at work. When something does not go my way I have to tell myself I cannot control other people and what they do. I can only control what I do and how I react. This is more then likely my biggest lesson to learn.

I have a lot of cool things happening on the blog soon. A lot of fun things with the kids that need a post so stay tuned.

Up To The Top Of Chimney Rock!

Last week I blogged about how my wife has caught the fitness bug and has been watching what she eats and working out every day. It has been nice to spend time with her and that we have something we can do together and be there for one another. It has brought out marriage to another level.

This past weekend my wife decided she wanted to go to the mountains and hike up Chimney Rock, which is near Lake Lure. It is about 2 hours from us. So we packed a cooler and a backpack and loaded the kids up and headed that way early on Saturday morning.

We got there before lunch and just before the crowds came in. We strapped Everly to my back and started to make our way to the top.

My wife did great. She and my oldest stopped a few times to catch their breath. They were a ton of stars. I think I heard someone say about 27 flights and 515 stairs total.

When we finally made it to the top I was very happy for my wife. It was a huge accomplishment for her. She is just starting her journey and I am looking forward to seeing where it takes her. She said she wanted to come back next year and do it again for some before and after photos.

Also the view is stunning…

After we hiked the rock we got some lunch at Medina’s and then played in the river before heading home. It was an awesome day and we will be back I hope really soon.
