Crazy Week


This week has been crazy and it is only Wednesday. At least we have half way through the week. I think they call this “hump day”. 

I am currently on a train heading into work after an intense crossfit partner workout. There was a lot of running, snatching, pulling up and of course sweat. 

Saw my mom last night and she is doing much better. The doctors are saying she is going to be discharged today and sent to rehab. I can’t wait to see how she recovers after a week at rehab. She seemed in good sports last night despite having a bad headache and not being able to keep her eyes open. Keep the prayers coming. 

I am super excited cause I got my email about packet pickup for the Greek Festival 5k today. So excited for this race. It’s going to be so much fun. This is the last short distance race of the year for me. The next few race are between 9 and 13 miles. Man I love running. 

Got a lot of good content coming in the next few weeks so be on the lookout! 

Seeing Green- The Shamrock 4 Miler Recap

So it’s the second race of the season and I had one goal in mind. That was to beat my time from The Super Run. I knew it was going to be hard but with a lot of effort it could be done. Night after night and a few early mornings, I went out in my garage and got on my treadmill and just started running at 7.0 mph and then worked my way up to 8.5 mph. The Wednesday before the race I got on the treadmill for the last time before tapering began and I finished in a record-breaking 30:31. Although that was great I knew I was not going to make it at that time during Shamrock. I would have been happy to finish between 32:00 and 36:00.

 So it was the big day. I pulled up to the race excited and nervous. The Shamrock 4 Miler was a very packed out event. There were people everywhere. They had booths set up from Chickfila, Running Works, and State farm, which were all giving away freebies to all the runners. You all know I love free stuff. I felt alone walking around. My wife had made plans prior to my registration to go to a mega kids consignment sale. I was not mad but I knew my biggest cheerleader was there in spirit.

It came time to line up. Like all my other races, I started to get nervous as I watch the clock countdown the last-minute and then the anticipation grew as I watched the volunteers getting the finishing medals ready. Then I looked up and the clock had ten seconds left. No going back and no stopping me now. Then I was off…


I started at a 8:00 minute mile pace. Pushing my legs while trying to reserve my energy. People were passing me but I still kept my pace. This was my race and not theirs. We turned on Elm Street, which was mostly downhill and I could feel myself starting to breathe hard. It was rather foggy and there was a lot of moisture in the air. When I turned on Ballantyne Commons Parkway, my legs were moving faster as I sped down hill reaching the 1 mile marker that read my time was 8:06. I started to smile as I pressed onward.
 The journey to mile two was all downhill. I kept getting faster and had to put the brakes on a few times cause I did not want to be that runner who falls flat on their face in the middle of a race. I started to see some of the people who passed me as they had already made it to the turn around at John J. Delaney Drive. I was not worried but just glad to be reaching the turn around spot. When I finally reached the 2 mile marker the time said 16:39. I knew then I knew then I needed to hurry.

One lesson I did learn in my high science class was that when you run downhill you almost always have to go back uphill. Yes that is right. Almost at the beginning of mile 3 I could feel my legs start to burn as I struggled up the first hill. I could hear the runners behind me moaning in pain which told me that I was in good company. It seemed that my pace was slowing down. I was breathing harder than ever. Now this was a mental race cause I had to talk myself out of walking a few times. I pushed and I pushed and then I saw the 3 mile marker and the time read 26:10. This was a victory cause I was I was in the home stretch.

Mile 4 was even more of an uphill battle. As I passed the places I was at in the beginning of the race, I kept saying that I was a fool. You knew you had to come back uphill. This was not going to be an easy 4 mile race. Get real. When I turned back on to Elm Street, I saw that last hill and I knew that as soon as I got up that last hill and turned left, I was almost home. I pushed, and pushed, and pushed until I was there. When I saw the last turn to the finish line I ran like Forrest Gump. As fast as I could until I saw that finish line and heard that loud music.

Crossing the finish line is by far my favorite part of any race but when I get that finisher medal in my hand, It makes it all worth it. Every pain in my legs, thighs, and feet worth it.  I looked at my stats later and it said I finished in 35:33, which means I met my goal of beating my Super Run 4 Miler time!

 

 Now that this race is done, I still have seven more races left for this year. The next one is going to be a rematch for me. The Oak Island Half Marathon, which is going to be different cause the last time I ran this race it rained the entire time and I was miserable. I am going to try this again and see if I could beat my time. This will be a challenge cause due to the raising popularity of this race, they moved it and changed the course. So I can’t wait to see how I do.

The 2016 Race Series Medals Are In!

 

So excited to get these medals this year. Everyone knows I love my running bling!!! Only one more race in this series to register for and I am on my way to getting the whole set.

RACE NOTE: I have decided not to do the Charlotte Marathon this year but instead run the half marathon. The half marathon was more fun last year and I think I need a year off from marathons but I am still very excited to get out there and RUN!!!

Well 2015 was a great year. I completed two milestones that I never thought possible. A lot of people have asked me what am I going to do now? To be completely honest I don’t really have a plan. I really want to focus on lifting but I can’t go a whole year without a little running. I also can’t run without bringing you guys along for the ride. 

This year is all about the bling when it comes to running. I got the itch after the marathon. I think I carried that heavy finisher metal around with me for two weeks. I was and I am still proud but I want more metals. So I have to earn them.

November 12- Thunder Road Marathon??

9 races and 9 metals for the year of 2016. I have not totally made up my mind about Thunder Road this year due mainly cause of the hard recovery I had afterwards. Those leg cramps are nothing to joke about. 

So I have about three weeks until the first race and I need to get started with my training. I know I can complete these races but I also don’t want to be over confident. I just need to run and more importantly have fun. 

So here is to a great race season. Be looking for my recap of the Super Bowl 4 Miler coming in a few weeks. 

Half A Year Of Fitness

I know a lot of my readers are more than likely tired of reading about my workouts but I have to say that I am really proud of this journey. I have enjoyed where it has taken me and excited for where it is going to take me.

I was sitting a home a few nights ago looking at pictures on my iPad when I noticed how much I have physically changed in six months. It’s hard to believe it all started with a simple walk on a treadmill.

January rolled around and I decided to start running something I have never done before. I weighed in at a rough looking and feeling 289 back then. I started with a small run of one mile. By the time I was done with the month I was running a solid two miles in 25 minutes.

When February came I reached the three mile mark. I could run a 5k in under 35 minutes. My pants were loose and I was weighing in somewhere in the 260s. My clothes were fitting better and I felt better as a person. I started changing my diet and counting the calories I was eating. That made a huge difference. I even had a killer swim workout that month. Still have a lot more work to do with that.

In March I decided after a dinner with my family to challenge myself a little. The weather was getting warmer and I needed to do something crazy. I decided to run a 5k race. So I began training three days a week for it. Running as hard as I could to get my time down to under thirty minutes. At this point I was about 255 on the scale.

April brought me another curve ball in my way. I was asked to run a 5k at the beach with my brother. I was excited and scared to run my first race. I had been training so hard for my suppose to be first race in May but I just considered this one a practice. I got to the race and ended up finishing third in my age division in 29:25! I was really proud of myself and I even got an award. I also went to my first yoga class and now I love yoga. I even got a mat.

Coming fresh off that win, I knew the month of May was going to better. I started off training really good but then life stuff happened and I became kind of lazy. I was scared u was not going to do good at my next race. I showed up nervous and scared but I ended up beating my time. I came in at 26:51. I was fifth in my age division but I did not care. I proved to myself I could do it.

Since accomplishing me race goal I made some really good choices in June. I bought a bike to try cycling. I started to run more. I even chose my next race which is next year in Charleston, South Carolina. The big 10k known as The Cooper River Bridge Run! I was not weighing in at my lowest which was 228 and I dropped to my third pant size. I thought to myself I am going to reward myself with a crazy adventure. So I decided to go zip-lining. My wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law went with me. It was the most scary and greatest thing ever. Also I went on my first hike and really felt relaxed and one with nature. That sounded super lame!

It’s been a crazy life changing year for me. I have learned so much about myself and what it really means to be active. I at least try to be active an hour a day. I do sometimes fall short but I just pick myself up. I honestly believe I would not be able to do this without the support of my amazing wife and daughter. They are the reason I have even started this. They say fatherhood changes a man and I believe that with all my heart.

Now what’s happening for the rest of 2014? Here is what’s happening and coming up!

-Right now I am finishing up my July Crossfit Challenge. If you read the blog regularly you already know how that is going.

-In August and September, you will be seeing a lot more cycling and more weightlifting.

-October is a big month cause I will be starting my training for The Cooper Bridge 10k. Also, more yoga!

That’s just a few things I have planned. I am sure there will be other great stuff. I really want to try a kickboxing class or boot camp. My long term fitness goals is to run a half marathon, a marathon, and then a triathlon before I am 35. I would also like to complete a Spartan Race and a Iron Man. All in good time!
